Phoenix, AZ-based Avnet, Inc. (NYSE:AVT), a technology distributor, has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its branch office in Marlton, N.J.

This marks Avnet's second facility within the company that meets the LEED certification standard.

Avnet first reached Gold level certification standards in January 2010 for its branch location in Madison, Ala. An Avnet facility in North Reading, Mass. is currently in the process of achieving LEED Certified level certification.

As part of Avnet's commitment to sustainability, it was decided to relocate the New Jersey office to a new 17,000-square-foot space where the company made it a point to incorporate green design.

The new space received 45 points on a scale of 40-49 points for the Certified category. Avnet was able to achieve this level of certification in part by recycling 77 percent of construction and demolition debris from being dumped in a landfill or incinerator. The new office also received high marks for offsetting 50 percent electricity consumption with renewable energy.

Other notable achievements include:

• Low-flow fixtures, which contribute to 32 percent water savings
• 18 percent reduction in lighting power
• 30 percent of building material and furniture contain high levels of recycled content
• The use of materials with low-emitting volatile organic compounds, which reduces the amount of indoor air contaminants
